MAXIMUM ACCELERATION, SOFT CAMBER ROTATION AND HIGHEND CONTROL FOR FIN SLALOM AND SPEED.

OVERVIEW

To chase top results in slalom racing and 500m speed runs you need a maximum horse power and most importantly... control! No matter where and when you cross the starting line - this sail has the power and stability to drive you to the finish with the best average speeds you've ever experienced. Even in the strongest gusts this sail holds the board's nose down so you can unleash the beast and accellerate until you get goosebumps. This is the original speed world record sail used by Heidi Ulrich which she prefers fpr deep downwind runs, while she and many riders would use the RaceSF in more crosswind conditions.

CONSTRUCTION

Racing is a "no-compromise" art in Patrik's dictionary. Everything is optimized with performance in mind and nothing is left to chance.
All the panels inside the sleeve are made by the thickest monofilm available which provides the best stiffness and a locked profile where the main shape is.
The main panels are 5 MIL clear monofilm from B7 to B4 and then 4 MIL above that batten. Why always clear? Because this material is few grams lighter than its coloured alternative! For the foot panel and a minimalistic area around the clew we kept a good impact resistance 5 MIL red x-ply materials. That are is often stressed when your sail rubs on the deck grip of the ultra-wide racing boards. Along the leech, you find again 5 MIL (closer to the clew) and 4 MIL (closer to the top) clear x-ply to keep the rear edge of the sail stable and aerodynamically clean even in hi-wind choppy conditions.
For the mast sleeve, we kept at minimum the amount of PE fabric material (which can become a little heavier when wet since it absorbs a little amount of water) and we instead maximized the 2 MIL x/scrim-ply area, which is super light but still with the highest number of wires/m2: so it's perfect for spreading the load among the whole sail.

SHAPE

LUFF CURVE
The bigger sails are used in lighter winds with flatter water (less chop, less movement) and therefore have a straighter luffcurve to make the big sails feel lighter and more responsive when pumping and rotating trough the jibes. The smaller sails already feel lighter / more reactive and early planing is not an issue. The stronger the wind and the rougher the conditions the more we set the focus on stability and control by giving the sail more luffcurve.

OUTLINE
With the performance focus on Slalom-Fins the outline is a lower aspect ratio in comparison to modern high-aspect foil sails. The boom on the Race+ is longer to give you just the right amount of backhand pressure and constant power delivery in changing winds on the race course and on the speed strip.

LOOSE LEECH
To gain acceleration and upwind performance the batten above the boom is tight at the leech side. For top speed the second batten above the boom is opening significantly. To hold the board nose down the top batten is rather a bit closed but has a soft rod batten with a tappered tip to release the pressure when needed.

CAMBERS & SPACERS
A metal bracket prevents squashing the edge of the sail body. With a choice of six different camber sizes (length/diametre) we achieve the optimal camber pressure for sail body stability while maintaining a smooth camber rotation. The additional spacers give the opportunity for the individual rider to fine tune the sail to his individual needs.

TRIM

The Race+ needs a good amount of downhaul force to create the needed stability on the sail body.
The suggested loose leech amount is indicated by connecting an imaginary line through the black/white colour transition on the batten pockets. Too little downhaul settings will compromise camber rotation and sail stability in the gusts. Make sure you reach the suggested minimum settings at all times.

Pro Tips

Nico Warembourg

‌ NICO WAREMBOURG (R&D Team)
"The Race+ is my first choice for fin slalom racing where I need constant power and speed. Many times the race courses are not angled perfectly and a modern slalom sail needs to perform well going upwind or deep downwind while being superfast on crosswind reaches - Well... the Race+ can do it all."

HEIDI ULRICH (Speed World Record Holder)

"In 2022 I broke the 500m women world speed record on a production Race+ 5.2 on a PATRIK production SDM 100% carbon mast and with our standard carbon race boom any customer can buy in the shop. This powerful sail gives me the accelleration, control and top speed I need for a clean 500m speed run. Then Race+ is pulling me down the course even on deep angles like we have in Luderitz. It's my first choice in downwind runs, while I use the RaceSF in more crosswind speed conditions."

About Us

Shaping with more than 25 years of technical expertise, Patrik Diethelm is far more than just another name in windsurfing. From his humble beginnings as a shop customer himself to a high-profile F2 brand employee and PWA professional, his move to founding the brand PATRIK together with Karin Jaggi in 2010 was simply a natural progression. Today we create windsurfing boards and sails, rig components, foils and fins and some of the most advanced wings and boards in the industry. In windsurfing we find our roots. Windsurfing is still driving us. Winging, surf foiling and any other windsports are what we came to love more and more over the years.
